Chronology of political division

The Roman Empire reigned on the Italian Peninsule and over all the known world for 1,200 years. After its decadence, at the 5th century, barbarians started to conquer some territories. Alaric I invaded Rome with his Visigoths in 410 AD. At the year 450 AD the Vandals plundered Rome.

The Roman Emperor Romulus Augustulus was overthronwn in 476 AD. Some germanic kingdoms started to shape in the North of Italy. The Bishop of Rome, later named Pope, started to have importance on the leading of Rome. The first Papal States were created, beginning a chain of alliances with the barbarians.

First of all, I love your site and blog and look forward to seeing how it all evolves over time.

Regarding this post's topic, few people know that Bari was an emirate from 847 to 871. There's a Wikipedia article here which references some other sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emirate_of_Bari.

Hi, Damian:
That's right, Bari was an emirate at that time, but not only Bari; also Taranto and Brindisi were independent emirates. The Muslims "ruled the waves" at the Mediterranean around the 8th and the 9th centuries.
I hope this post could help people to know where to address in different years or centuries of the Italian history.

Best Regards

Pablo Briand.
