Batch Numbers and the New Version of FamilySearch.org

- Updated:Dec 08, 2016

Family Search has put online a very interesting source of information. The data was gathered years ago by volunteers, members of the LDS Church who copied acts from microfilms of several Italian communes. These indexations are partial, which means, records of a Parish or of a Commune were not completely indexed.

For many decades starting in the mid-1960s, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints copied key information from the vital records of many countries worldwide and entered that information into a computer. Most of these records were from the early 1500s to 1885.

Step 1: Go to http://www.familysearch.org and select Continental Europe.

Step 2. Select Italy

Step 3 - Select Births, Marriages or Deaths

Step 3: Type the last name

When found an interesting data, we may access the individual file of every person and almost at the end we’ll see this information:

Source Film Number: 1101502 = that’s the microfilm’s number where the info was taken from.

The batch number identifies the specific collection of historical records that an extracted record came from. For example, batch C740153 refers to the collection “Bivona Agrigento - Births - 1830-1834”
Because these extraction projects occurred so long ago, the extracted records are not yet connected to online images. If you want to see the original record, find the microfilm number. You can then either come to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah or have the microfilm sent to a family history center near you.

If we want more information about the microfilm, we can browse in the Family Search Catalog, going to LIBRARY CATALOG.  We choose FILM/FICHE SEARCH typing on there the microfilm’s number. Then we’ll obtain the details, say, to what commune that microfilm belongs to.

Indexes include births and baptisms from 1806 to1900 and deceases from 1809 to1900 - These are those records formerly named Western Europe Vital Records Index by Italian Region, and in the past we had to purchase 8 CD for that information. More information and instructions. Now we can consult them, blending surnames and birth places in the Search Form.
